Amazon S3 alternative

An Amazon S3 alternative,
hosted in India.

Your code already speaks S3. Stornox speaks it too. Point your SDKs and backup jobs at a new endpoint, keep the data in India, and plan your bill from a published rupee rate card.

  • S3 API
  • Stored in India
  • INR rate card
  • Mumbai support

Why people look

What we hear on first calls.

Nobody switches storage for fun. These are the reasons that come up most often when Indian teams get in touch.

"Finance can't forecast the bill."

They want a per-TB rate in rupees that a CFO can put in a budget without modelling requests and transfer separately.

"Audit asks where the data lives."

They want a provider whose whole footprint is in India, so there is nothing to explain about other regions.

"Backups sit in the same account as production."

They want an independent, locked copy with a different provider and different credentials.

"We want someone to call."

They want a support team in India that picks up the phone during their working day.

What changes

Two settings change. Most things don't.

Usually stays as it is

  • Your S3 SDK code and AWS CLI scripts (add a custom endpoint)
  • Backup jobs that support S3-compatible targets
  • Bucket layout, prefixes and object keys
  • Multipart uploads of large files
  • Versioning and Object Lock retention

Worth checking first

  • Services outside the S3 API: events, analytics, serverless triggers
  • IAM and bucket policies, which you recreate for Stornox users
  • Endpoint URLs hard-coded in scripts and config files
  • One-time transfer charges from your current provider
  • Your backup vendor's notes on S3-compatible storage

Migration

How a move usually goes.

  1. 01

    Start with one workload

Backups or an archive are the usual choice. If something goes wrong, nobody's production app is affected.

  2. 02

    Test with real data

We set up a trial bucket. Your team runs uploads and restores with the tools they use every day.

  3. 03

    Copy in stages

rclone or your backup software moves the data. Compare object counts and checksums after each batch.

  4. 04

    Switch, watch, then retire

Point the workload at Stornox, keep an eye on it for a couple of weeks, then delete the old copy when you are comfortable.

Copying a bucket with rclone

# "source" and "stornox" are remotes you set up with `rclone config` rclone copy source:my-bucket stornox:my-bucket --progress --checksum --transfers 16

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Is Stornox the same thing as Amazon S3?

No. Stornox is a separate company and service. It supports the S3 API, which is why tools written for Amazon S3 can usually connect to it. We are not affiliated with Amazon Web Services.

Do I have to rewrite my application?

Usually not. Most teams change the endpoint URL and the access keys and leave everything else alone. If you rely on a provider-specific service outside the S3 API, such as event notifications into a serverless function, plan a replacement for that piece.

How long does a move take?

It depends on how much data you have and how fast your link is. As a rough guide, a 1 Gbps link that stays busy moves about 10 TB a day. Large archives are normally moved in stages over a few weeks while the old copy stays live.

Will my current provider charge me to move data out?

Possibly. Many providers charge for data leaving their platform. Check your provider's current pricing page or your contract and budget for it as a one-time cost.

Can I use Stornox alongside my existing cloud?

Yes, and many teams start that way. Backups or archives move first, and the rest of your stack stays where it is.
