Azure Blob alternative
Moving off Azure Blob?
Here is what changes.
Stornox is S3-compatible object storage hosted in India. Teams usually move backups and long-term archives first, because that is where a per-TB rupee price and an India-only footprint make the most difference.
Good candidates
What to move first.
Backup repositories
Veeam, Commvault and similar tools can write to an S3-compatible target with Object Lock. Add Stornox as a second repository and let new backups land there.
Cold archives
Old project data, logs and records that are rarely read but must be kept. These are easy to copy and easy to verify.
A second copy of something critical
A copy held with a different provider, under different credentials, is a strong safeguard against account-level mistakes.
The mapping
Containers become buckets.
| In Azure Blob Storage | On Stornox | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Storage account | Stornox account | One account can hold many buckets |
| Container | Bucket | Usually one-to-one |
| Blob name with "/" in it | Object key with the same prefix | Folder-style paths carry over unchanged |
| Blob SDK | Any S3 SDK | Set the Stornox endpoint and keys |
| Immutable blob storage | S3 Object Lock | Set retention per bucket or per object |

FAQ
Questions we get asked.
Is the Blob API the same as the S3 API?
No. Azure Blob Storage has its own API and Stornox uses the S3 API. Applications that call the Blob SDK directly need to switch to an S3 SDK. Backup products often support both, in which case you only add a new repository.
How do I copy data from Blob Storage to Stornox?
rclone can read from Azure Blob Storage and write to any S3-compatible service in one command. Backup software can also create a fresh repository on Stornox and re-seed it.
Will Azure charge me to move the data out?
It may. Check Azure's current pricing page or your agreement for data transfer charges and treat them as a one-time migration cost.
Do I have to move everything?
No. A common pattern is to keep running applications where they are and move only backups or cold archives to Stornox.
Microsoft and Azure are trademarks of the Microsoft group of companies, mentioned only to describe migration options. Stornox is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.
