Archive
Archive storage for data
you have to keep.
Logs, closed records, finished projects and last year's backups do not belong on your fastest disks. Move them to storage in India, lock them, and set them to delete on schedule.
What people archive
Data you keep and hope not to open.
Logs
Application, security and audit logs for investigations and compliance.
months to yearsBusiness records
Finance, HR and customer records with a legal retention period.
yearsFinished projects
Drawings, design files and project data after handover.
yearsOld backups
Monthly and yearly restore points for long-term recovery.
yearsResearch data
Datasets and results that need to be kept and reproducible.
long termDoing it well
Four habits of a tidy archive.
- 01
Group by how long you keep it
For example 1, 3, 7 and 10 years. Each group gets its own rules.
- 02
Give each group a bucket
Matching Object Lock and lifecycle settings on each one.
- 03
Keep an index
A simple list of what is in each archive and where, so someone can find it in five years.
- 04
Delete on schedule
Let lifecycle rules remove data when the retention period ends, where policy allows.
FAQ
Questions we get asked.
What is the difference between an archive and a backup?
A backup is a copy of data you are still using, kept so you can restore it. An archive is where data goes when you no longer use it day to day but still have to keep it, like closed records, old logs or finished projects.
What is cold storage?
Storage for data you rarely touch. Some services make cold data slow or costly to read back. On Stornox, archived data sits in the same S3-compatible storage, so you read it with the same tools when you need it.
How do I keep archive costs under control?
Know how much you add each month and how long you keep it, then use lifecycle rules to delete data when its time is up. Stornox charges per TB stored, plus listed write charges.
